Types of PET CT Scan in Delhi NCR

Choose the right scan based on clinical requirement

Whole Body PET CT (FDG)

Uses a small amount of radioactive drug (FDG) with CT. Most common scan for cancer staging and monitoring.

Prostate – Ga68 PSMA PET-CT

Ga68 labelled PSMA scan performed specifically to detect prostate cancer.

Neuroendocrine – Ga68 DOTA

DOTA PET-CT for detecting cancerous Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs). Often preferred over whole-body FDG in these cases.

Cardiac Viability Assessment

Cardiac PET-CT (Cardiac Test + FDG PET component) using gamma camera technology.

Abdomen – Whole Body FDG

Focused evaluation of the abdominal region as part of a whole-body FDG PET-CT study.

What is PET CT Scan?

PET CT stands for Positron Emission Tomography combined with Computed Tomography. It is a nuclear imaging technique that helps detect cancer and assess metabolic activity of cells and tissues in a single imaging session.

The technology was developed by David Townsend and Ronald Nutt. The first clinical prototype was installed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 1998, and commercial machines became widely available from 2001. Today, thousands of PET CT systems are installed worldwide.

EasyBookMyLab has central access to well-reputed and NABL-certified nuclear medicine centres across Delhi NCR, so you get accurate results at the minimum possible cost.

How the Scan is Performed

A small amount of a radioactive drug (tracer) is used. The most common tracer is FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose). Because cancer cells grow faster than healthy tissue, they take up more FDG.

The PET scanner detects the radiation given off by the FDG and produces colour-coded images that show both normal and diseased tissue. The CT component provides detailed anatomical information.

Radioactive glucose is given about one hour before scanning. The entire process is painless and highly informative for cancer, heart and brain evaluation.

What Happens During a PET CT Scan

1
Arrival & Preparation

You report 30 minutes early. Previous records, old PET-CT reports & CD (if any) should be carried. You may stay for about 4 hours from the scheduled time.

2
Tracer Administration

Radioactive glucose (FDG) is given. You wait approximately one hour for the tracer to distribute throughout the body.

3
Scanning

You change into a hospital gown and lie comfortably on the scan table. The PET CT machine acquires images of your organs and cells. The radioactive liquid helps doctors track metabolic activity.

4
Report

Experienced nuclear medicine physicians review the images and prepare a detailed report for your doctor.

Prerequisites for PET CT Scan

  • Carry all previous medical records, old PET-CT report & CD (if any).
  • Report to the lab 30 minutes prior to the scheduled time. You may need to remain for at least 4 hours.
  • Minimum 8 hours of fasting.
  • Diabetic patients: Stop diabetic medication and ensure fasting blood sugar is ≤ 180 mg/dl without medication on the day of the test.

Any Side Effects?

PET CT is a painless procedure widely used for cancer, heart and brain evaluation. It involves a radioactive tracer, contrast material (if used) and X-rays from the CT component.

There are no known significant side effects from the radioactive tracer in the small amounts used. Contrast can be a concern for patients with kidney disease. Radiation exposure is present but the dose is carefully controlled and scan times have reduced with newer technology.
