A blood test usually involves taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm. The inside of the elbow or wrist is commonly used because the veins are relatively close to the surface. In children, samples are often taken from the back of the hand; a special spray or cream may be used to numb the skin.
A tight band (tourniquet) is placed around the upper arm. This temporarily slows blood flow and makes the vein swell so the sample is easier to take. The skin may be cleaned with an antiseptic wipe.
A needle attached to a syringe or collection tube is inserted into the vein. You may feel a slight pricking or scratching sensation, but it should not be painful.
If you are uncomfortable with needles or blood, tell the person taking the sample so they can help you feel more at ease. Pressure is applied afterwards to stop any bleeding.
