CA15.3 (Cancer antigen 15.3) is a protein produced by a variety of cells, most notably breast cancer cells. The protein enters the bloodstream, where it can be measured.
CA15.3 levels are higher than normal in the majority of women with metastatic breast cancer (called metastatic breast cancer). CA15.3 levels do not rise in all types of breast cancer because some cancer cells do not overproduce the antigen.

A CA15.3 test is a blood test that is performed with a needle. It is usually performed in a private or hospital lab. There is no need for you to do anything special to prepare.
CA15.3 levels can be elevated in both cancerous and non-cancerous conditions. CA15.3 levels are frequently elevated in breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
In general, the higher the level of CA15.3 in the blood, the greater the likelihood of cancer in the body. When breast cancer has spread to the bones, the liver, or both, the levels are at their highest. If the level of CA15.3 decreases or returns to normal, it may indicate that the treatment is effective. If levels rise over time, it could indicate that the cancer is not responding well to treatment, is still growing, or is returning (recurring).
CA15.3 levels may be higher than normal in cancers of the lung, pancreas, ovary, and prostate, but not as high as in breast cancer.
Endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and liver disease are all non-cancerous conditions that raise CA15.3 levels. It is also possible to increase it during pregnancy. CA15.3 levels are usually limited under these conditions. They rarely continue to rise over time.
