What is an AMH test?

AMH testing determines the level of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) in your blood. AMH is produced by both men (people assigned male at birth) and women (people assigned female at birth), but the test is most commonly used in women — primarily to provide a snapshot of a woman’s reproductive health.

What is the definition of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH)?

AMH is important in the development of a baby’s sex organs while in the womb. Male babies have higher AMH levels, which prevents them from developing female reproductive organs. Female babies require only a small amount of AMH to develop.

AMH is produced by cells within the follicles of the ovaries in women. Follicles are tiny fluid-filled sacs that contain and release eggs in the ovary.

  • AMH levels are proportional to the number of eggs or ovarian reserve:
  • More eggs and a larger ovarian reserve are associated with higher AMH levels.
  • Lower AMH levels indicate fewer eggs and a reduced ovarian reserve.

When would lab perform an AMH test?

An AMH test may be performed by your provider to determine whether an ovarian mass is a granulosa cell tumour. AMH levels can also be used to determine whether:

  • The treatment is effective.
  • The tumour has reappeared.

What does an AMH test reveal?

An AMH test will tell you how many eggs you have left and whether your ovaries are ageing too quickly. It may reveal that you have a narrower window for becoming pregnant.

An AMH test may also reveal how well you respond to injectable fertility drugs, which stimulate your ovaries to mature multiple eggs in preparation for IVF (IVF).

What information cannot an AMH test provide?

While AMH is linked to egg count, it does not predict fertility (with or without treatments) or when you will enter menopause.

Non-regular ovulation, blocked fallopian tubes, pelvic scarring, endometriosis, and uterine abnormalities such as fibroids

Also, keep in mind that even if your AMH levels are within the normal range, other factors such as:

Age, medical conditions, smoking, and so on.

Sperm motility and count

Non-regular ovulation, blocked fallopian tubes, pelvic scarring, endometriosis, and uterine abnormalities such as fibroids

What is an appropriate AMH level for your age?

AMH levels naturally decline with age, so having a lower ovarian reserve in your 30s, 40s, and 50s is normal.

Consider the following estimates, which are on the lower end of the spectrum for each age group:

  • 3.0 ng/mL at 25 years old.
  • 2.5 ng/mL at 30 years old.
  • 1.5 ng/mL at 35 years old.
  • 1 ng/mL at 40 years old.
  • 0.5 ng/mL at 45 years old.

Higher AMH levels are not always beneficial. AMH levels may be elevated in some people with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

How does the AMH test function?

AMH testing is a blood test. A thin needle is used by a healthcare professional to draw blood from a vein in your arm. It only takes a few minutes to complete the process.

Is it necessary for me to schedule an AMH test around my period?

An AMH test can be performed at any time during your menstrual cycle. AMH, unlike other reproductive hormones, does not fluctuate significantly throughout the month.

How should I prepare for the AMH exam?

There is nothing you can do to prepare for an AMH test.

When should I expect to receive the test results?

If your blood sample is sent to a lab, you may not receive your results for several days. If your doctor ordered this test, they will schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the results of your AMH test (and any additional results). You will work together to determine the best pregnancy or treatment plan for you.
