Echocardiography is a test that uses sound waves to produce live images of your heart (an echocardiogram). It is essentially an ultrasound of the heart. This test allows your doctor to monitor how your heart and its valves are functioning and is especially important for assessing the health of the heart muscle after a heart attack.

Your doctor may suggest an echocardiogram when:
To assess heart muscle health
To evaluate cardiac cause
To check valve function
To look for cardiac sources
Detailed valve assessment
Different echocardiogram techniques for different clinical needs
The most common type. A transducer is placed on the chest wall and sends ultrasound waves through the skin. Reflected waves create images of heart structure and function. Quick, painless and non-invasive.
A probe with a transducer is passed down the esophagus (close to the heart). Provides very clear images of the heart chambers and valves when standard TTE does not give adequate views.
Assesses how well the heart works under stress. Exercise or medication creates a stressful environment. Commonly used for chest pain, suspected coronary artery disease, or after a heart attack.
Uses Doppler ultrasound to detect abnormal blood flow through the heart and vessels. Helpful in atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and assessing the severity of valve problems.
Both 2D and 3D echocardiography are quick, painless and non-invasive. 3D imaging captures the heart structure in greater depth and is particularly helpful for detailed diagnosis and better management of heart conditions.
2D Echo is the standard workhorse. 3D Echo adds depth for complex valve and structural assessment.
An echocardiogram uses sound waves (ultrasound of the heart) to create moving images of your heart beating and pumping blood. Your doctor uses these images to identify heart diseases and conditions.
Depending on the information needed, you may have one or more types of echocardiogram. Most standard transthoracic studies involve very little or no risk.
No special preparation is usually required for a traditional transthoracic or Doppler echocardiogram.
Avoid eating or drinking for several hours before the exam to reduce the risk of vomiting. You may feel unsteady after sedation — arrange someone to accompany you.
Avoid smoking and caffeinated drinks. Inform the physician about all medications so specific instructions can be given.
For TEE you may need someone to take you home because of the sedative. Most other echo types allow you to resume normal activities immediately.
